Sachertorte has a history that goes back to 1832. Apprentice baker, Franz Sacher, made the first one when the Austrian State Chancellor, Prince Klemens Wenzel von Metternich, needed a special dessert for a social function. The lead baker was not on the job due to illness, and 16-year old, Sacher, took on the task. The cake was a hit, and the Sachertorte had its famous beginning. You'll think it's a hit, too, with its layers of rich chocolate sponge, apricot preserves, and chocolate glaze.
